2019 - 2020 Meet the Orchestra Series
"The Science of Sound"
A school outreach program to excite and ignite a passion for orchestral instruments in our youth through outreach programs for the Bridgeport Schools. Our goal this year was to explore instrument sound production and learn what makes music.

Jim Royle and Brian Ente Percussion Ensemble
What needs to happen for sound to exist? What is a vibration and how does it affect the quality and tone of the sound. What is pitch and how is pitch adjusted in the percussion family? Dynamic quality is affected by velocity and mass - how does that apply to instruments of the percussion family? How do our ears process sound and what are those decimal and Hertz levels we can not hear? Preconcert lectures prepared students for a journey through the history and world of percussion led by the Jim Royle and Brian Ente Percussion Ensemble.

Borealis Quintet
There are many different mouthpieces and shapes to wind instruments. We will explore the way these instruments create sound and manipulate dynamics and pitch while explore the rich chamber repertoire of wind and brass family.

The Fontenay Ensemble
Wendy Kerner and her Fontenay Ensemble will introduce students to the Harp, flute, clarinet, cello, violin and viola. Students will learn how string instruments are able to vary pitch and dynamics through plucking and bowing techniques. We will explore what affects the quality of sound of these instruments and how one can produce a variety of textures by using all parts of an instrument
