Tour Itinerary

 

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 5: Depart JFK for Basel, Switzerland via British Air. Dinner aloft.

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 6: Arrive in Basel. After clearing customs meet your Goodspeed & Bach trip director and transfer to the MS Deutschland, your vessel for the voyage on the Rhine. In the afternoon, enjoy a city tour of Basel. Especially noteworthy are the 12th c. Munster, the Museum Jean Tinguely displaying his kinetic sculptures and the worldfamous Kunstmuseum with Rodin’s Burghers of Calais in its courtyard. Tonight the Captain greets you on board at a cocktail reception, followed by a gala welcome dinner. The order is, “Leinen los!” as we set sail on the Rhine. D.

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 7: After breakfast join the Goodspeed trip director for a lecture in preparation for the evening’s musical offering. Arrive in Strasbourg, capital of Alsace, and enjoy a city tour, including the sandstone Cathedral, proclaimed “the most beautiful thing in the Gothic style anywhere in the world.” Dinner is served on board before we attend a concert of the Festival Nacional du Musica Aujourd’hui in Strasbourg. B, L, D, C and private Goodspeed lecture.

MONDAY, OCTOBER 8: Worms; Heidelberg & Speyer option; Rudesheim. This morning we sail for the charming town of Speyer, dating from Roman times. We arrive first at the old imperial city of Worms, with a history dating back 5000 years to the Celts.

You may remain on board and continue to Speyer or take the optional excursion to visit Heidelberg, one of Germany’s most storied cities, situated on the banks of the River Neckar. Afterwards return to Speyer to see the impressive 11th century Romanesque cathedral, the 12th century Jewish Baths and the 15th century Domnapf, a giant sandstone wine-bowl used to toast the consecration of new bishops. After the tour, reboard the Deutschland in Speyer and sail to Rudesheim, a typical Rhine River town. Come ashore with the Goodspeed tour director to explore the town, or choose an optional guided tour of the nearby Mechanical Musical Instrument Museum. In the evening enjoy dinner and local entertainment on board. B, L, D, Heidelberg Option, Mechanical Musical Instrument Option.

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 9: The Lorelei & Reichsburg Castle. This morning enjoy daylight sailing on the “Romantic Rhine,” its charming villages, lush vineyards and historic castles. Espy the fabled Lorelei Rock that has inspired artists and poets for centuries, and as we watch for the Rhine maidens, our Goodspeed director will teach us German Lieder. We pass Koblenz where the Rhine and Moselle converge at the Deutsche Eck. Before lunch enjoy another recital by our very own pianist, Gleb Ivanov. We will then sail along the winding Moselle, through one of Europe’s most beautiful wine valleys, while we enjoy a special on-board wine-tasting from local vineyards.

In late afternoon visit the Reichsburg Castle. After dinner on board, the Goodspeed director will host an informal gathering to prepare for tomorrow’s concert. B, L, D, German Lieder, Piano Recital, Wine Tasting, Reichsburg Castle tour, Private Goodspeed roundtable.

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 10: The Moselle & Rhine. Depart early this morning from Cochem, sailing down the Moselle and the Rhine. In the late afternoon arrive at Cologne, cultural and economic capital of the Rhineland, where tonight we attend a concert ashore by the Guerzenich Orchestra. B, L, D, Concert.

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 11: Cologne. In the morning enjoy a walking tour of the city with a visit to its famous Cathedral, the second tallest Gothic structure in the world. Enjoy lunch on board while sailing for Nijmegen in the Netherlands. In the afternoon, our very own Gleb Ivanov will again dazzle us with his incredible talent. As we sail into Dutch waters, we’ll enjoy the Captain’s farewell dinner. B, L, Piano Recital, D.

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 12: Amsterdam. This morning we sail towards Amsterdam. As the picturesque Dutch countryside glides by, join the Goodspeed trip director for a final lecture
to prepare for tonight’s concert at the famous Concertgebouw. An optional tour to the quaint fishing village of Hoorn is available. After lunch, arrive in Amsterdam for a city tour, or visit the Rijksmuseum or Van Gogh Museum on your own. Enjoy dinner on board, after which we’ll attend our final concert in Amsterdam. SATURDAY, OCTOBER 13: After breakfast, transfer to the airport for the return flight to
the USA.
