MFY SCHOOL Residency/Exchange Program
SCHOOL RESIDENCY PROGRAM
The School Residency programs offer music departments of local public schools the opportunity to have professional musicians coach and perform one-on-one for and with music students and their teachers, motivating the students to improved performance and strengthening the curriculum. The residencies have introduced students to classical music through various types of ensembles, in concert and in year-long programs in Bridgeport, Norwalk, Trumbull, Fairfield, Westport, Weston, and Redding. Funded largely by individual and foundation support, the program has also received grants from Chamber Music America, the National Endowment for the Arts and the Connecticut Commission for Culture and Tourism. The support, coaching and exposure to professional ensembles helps students actualize their dreams and achieve their personal best.
MUSICAL EXCHANGE PROGRAM
Music for Youth firmly believes that music is the perfect means of bridging gaps between people from different communities and cultures, and a chance for students to move comfortably from their own environment into a new one by jointly tackling the task of making music together. The results have been excellent music-making, a warm relationship with the quartet, “personal best” achievement for individual members of the Musical Exchange orchestra, and a renewed commitment to their instruments for many students. Middle School string orchestras from Bridgeport and Weston rehearse and perform together throughout the year, traveling to each other’s schools, sharing music, bridging differences and uniting in the study of their instruments. In 2016 the Haven String Quartet met with students six separate days during the year, preparing for two final concerts in May. The culminating concerts in Bridgeport and Weston , attended by students, parents, and teachers from both communities, were a great success and a great recruiting tool for younger aspiring string students. Upcoming students eagerly look forward to being part of next year’s Musical Exchange Orchestra.
Exchange Orchestra Concert April 28th, 2017
Over 60 students participated in the Weston, Bridgeport Exchange Orchestra this year. This program was launched in January when students from Weston were bused to Bridgeport for a day with the High Horizons and Multicultural Magnet schools 8th grade strings class.. The Haven String Quartet worked in small group sectionals with the exchange orchestra to help prepare for the spring concerts in April. In March the Bridgeport School students traveled to Weston to continue working together on the repertoire. The final concert (in video above) was a celebration of the partnership of these three schools and the Haven Quartet. The students enjoyed the opportunity to meet new friends, share lunch and conversation.
